Principles of Practice
A short course on the philosophies and principles that will help you fall in love with the practice room

Hey there,
Welcome to The Principles of Practice - a short, high-impact email course I made for singers juts like you. You’re here because you care about getting better and maybe making peace with the practice room. I’m here because I’ve sung nearly 40 roles and over 400 performances as a fest singer- and I've learned a few key things about practicing over the years. And I want to share.
Let’s dive in.
When I was in my first year of grad school, I had a lesson so rough I'm still honestly a bit traumatised. It was my very first lesson and I'm 100% sure my teacher was just as confused as I was as to how I was even admitted. Ya girl (currently working as a coloratura soprano) couldn't even think about singing a high C. At the end, overwhelmed and sweaty, I asked: “How do I practice all of this?”
Honestly? Best question I ever asked.
Here’s what I learned:
There’s a difference between knowing something and learning it. And the practice room is where you make that leap.
We know we should support. We know diction matters. We know we need vowel modifications, job strategy, stamina...
But knowing is free. It’s passive. It’s input. Learning is demanding. Exhaustive. It requires action, failure, time, resilience, recovery...
So ask yourself: What do I know... but haven’t actually learned yet?
This whole email series will help you build a bridge between the two.
Reply and tell me: What’s something you’ve “known” forever... but haven’t really learned yet? Hit reply or DM me or tag me over on IG @marthaeasonsoprano
And hey, if you want a powerful tool to track what you're learning (not just what you did) in the practice room, that’s exactly what a practice journal is for. This series goes hand-in-hand with The Practice Journal Method, and it’s the ideal primer for my upcoming 30-Day Vocal Exercise Challenge (which you can sign up for here and I'll let you know when it's finally ready).
Want the Practice Journal Method? Well, here's a discount just for the Principles of Practice people- because I'm that in love with you killing it in the practice room and telling me all about it. Get it with the discount HERE.
Happy Practicing,
Martha

Float but still connect. Ha. [Cries in baby spinto]
What do I know but haven’t learned yet. Great question!!
For me, how to belt!
